The Whole Picture

If my scissors

took great care

cutting along the edges, where your colors met mine

could I create a photograph, a unity?

Something that includes all of the details, the snowy landscape

the trees in their splendor, just a hint of coolness

a small trace of warmth

your hand in mine, our eyes looking outward

not worrying about the difficulties, the challenges ahead

the unsure footing, so many chances to fail, to stumble

a lifetime to enjoy the sights, a single moment, measured in minutes, seconds

when we knew, both of us, in our own time, when it felt right

that one image would survive the trimming, the selection process,

My highest ideal attained

you my love

yes, you

Photos taken near Lake Sabrina. High Sierra. California. November 1989
